Electrified Locks

Last month we discussed relays and what they can do. This month let’s discuss what they can control. Electric releases, why did I say release and not strike. It is because a new field of devices are now available for you to use. You no longer need to install an electric strike or magnetic lock when you have to control a door with a card reader, keypad or remote button.

Adams Rite has come out with a a new electrified handle for the glass store front door, the 4593E. It will work with all Adams Rite deadlatchs. This new handle will move when pulled on but will not open the door. When power is sent to the door a solenoid inside the handle will engage a pin which allows the handle to open the door, when the handle is released the door will relock automatically. The 4593E handle is also capable of being set mechanically into a latched but unlocked (Passage Mode). It comes in three colors 121 Dark Bronze, 119 Black and 130 Silver. The 4593E handle comes in either 12 or 24 VDC, and is handed.

You can also use the new Securitron Mortise Glass Lock (MGL). This lock will fit in the place of an Adams Rite 1 1/8-inch backset deadlatch. The latch is electrified so there is no need for a strike. When power is sent to the latch a pin moves allowing the latch to float free. By doing this, the latch will fold into itself.
The latch also comes with it own handle for the inside of the door. It has a Request to Exit (REX) switch build into it. If it is part of an Access Control System, the REX is needed for the system not to receive a door forced open signal when someone leaves. The handle is field reversible and comes in either 12 or 24 VDC. The latch is handed so be sure to specify the hand of the door.

Electrified Mortise and Cylindrical locks are more common today than ever before. They can offer customers a variety of choices. It will look like every lock in the building, because it is the same with one exception, a solenoid has been added to the inside of the lock body. It will now work with a card reader, keypad or push button. Most of the popular brands can be electrified. Mortised locks can have a REX switch build into the handle for the Access Control System.

An added feature is that both of the above locks are always free egress. This means the Fire Marshall will like it as they meet the Life Safety Code 101. These same locks can be tied into the Building Fire Alarm system to unlock when the Fire alarm is set off.
